The aim of poker is simple but difficult to attain. Players strive to be the last one standing in the hand. You can either have a very strong hand or bluff your way to this outcome, but that requires immense skill. If two or more players are left at the end of the hand, all players will be required to reveal their hand, with the player who has the strongest hand, taking the pot and emerging victorious. Strong hands can be straight flushes, royal flushes, four-of-a-kind, three-of-a-kind, full houses, two pairs, straights, or just flushes.

Getting Started

While the game has been considered easy to learn, it is difficult to master and requires practice. The first thing you’ll want to do is work out your table position and place your blind if you are of the two players to the left of the dealer. You’ll then receive two cards; strong hands are pairs of two cards over 10. The player to the left of the big blind can then call, raise or fold on the big blind. The game goes in a clockwise motion until all players have either placed the same money in the pot or folded.

The dealer then places three cards on the table, with the idea that you will use these in conjunction with the two cards in your hand to build the strongest hand possible. Another round of betting will then take place, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer. This process is completed two more times but only one card gets dealt with. There will be five cards in the middle, showing you how strong your hand is. A final round of betting takes place, and then the remaining players compare cards to see whose hand was the strongest and who will take the pot.
